A brand identity built from place
Newcastle East didn’t have a formal identity system, but it had a strong sense of place. The challenge was to create a brand that could support a growing and diverse mix of businesses, while encouraging visitation and connection to the area. That meant designing with context, not against it.
We developed a brand identity grounded in materials and textures: timber, sandstone and surrounding architecture. A deliberate hit of orange was introduced to inject energy and momentum. Every element was intentional. Rough textures and imperfect edges reflected a place shaped by history and character. The identity extended into language, using NE (“any”) as a simple but distinctive device to unify headlines and messaging. Beyond the logo and visual identity, we built a scalable brand framework – a toolkit designed to flex while maintaining cohesion. This gave businesses everything they needed to promote the precinct confidently: logos, icons, print and digital collateral, all at their fingertips.
More than 100 businesses attended the launch event, where the new brand was unveiled. The print, digital and social were met with great enthusiasm. Campaign materials quickly appeared throughout the precinct and even beyond, reaching as far as Sydney – as businesses excitedly shared the new identity. Collaboration followed immediately, with multiple businesses forming partnerships and launching joint offers.
In the first month after launch: The brand reached 300,000+ people on social media,
generated hundreds of interactions, the website recorded 1,000+ unique visits.
By respecting the past, we created an identity that brings a diverse community of businesses together – a brand shaped by place and built to evolve with it.
