Transforming complex educational frameworks into a clear, scalable digital resource for the FEE-FREE Uni Ready initiative.
The Challenge

The University of Newcastle, in partnership with the Department of Education, needed to bring the FEE-FREE Uni Ready initiative to life from the ground up, with no existing website or defined visual identity. They needed a digital platform, intended to function as a central resource for educators, administrators, policymakers and Department stakeholders, supporting the delivery of FFUR programs across the sector.

The content itself was complex, text-heavy and difficult to digest. The challenge was twofold: simplify the information architecture without losing depth, and create a digital experience that felt supportive, empowering and distinctly university without being overwhelming.

At the same time, the site needed to balance competing demands. It had to deliver a resource-rich experience while remaining clear and usable, and enable the internal team to manage and scale content easily over time.

Our Approach

We started with a full content and IA review, breaking down complex frameworks into clearer, more digestible pathways. Long-form content was restructured into modular sections, supported by intuitive navigation patterns including anchored sections and progressive disclosure to reduce cognitive load.

Wireframing focused on clarity first, establishing strong hierarchy, logical flow and repeatable components that could scale with the program. For content-heavy pages, we introduced an expandable left-hand menu to help users navigate long-form information with ease and move between sections without losing context.

From a visual perspective, the identity was shaped by Indigenous artist Renee Lamb’s artwork Gilli Watta. This became a foundational design influence, informing colour, form and layout to create a system that felt both distinctive and grounded in meaning. A clean, structured UI and refined typographic system balanced warmth with academic credibility.

Equally important was usability behind the scenes. The site was designed with a flexible, component-based approach, giving the UON team an intuitive way to manage and expand content without compromising consistency.

The Results

A scalable, future-ready website that transforms complex academic content into a clear, structured and accessible resource for the sector. The platform supports educators, administrators and policymakers with practical, evidence-based guidance, helping drive consistency and confidence in the delivery of FFUR programs. The combination of thoughtful IA, a flexible content system and a visually distinctive identity creates a cohesive platform that works for both users and the team managing it, now and into the future.
